Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-10-27
1. Who these terms are with
These terms are an agreement between you and SB Works Ltd (company number 15398202), 86-90, Paul Street, London, Greater London, England, EC2A 4NE ("we", "us"), and govern your use of the Praeter app and your purchases of tours on our website.
By downloading or using Praeter, or by buying a tour on our website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app or buy from the website. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal data.
2. What Praeter is, and your safety
Praeter provides self-guided walking tours. Audio plays automatically when your device's location shows that you have reached a stop.
Praeter is a guide for general interest and entertainment. It is not a navigation, mapping or safety tool. While you use the app, you are responsible for:
- your own safety, and the safety of anyone with you, including any children in your care;
- watching out for traffic, cyclists, uneven ground and other hazards;
- obeying traffic rules, local laws and any signs or instructions on site; and
- staying on public rights of way and out of private property, closed areas and any place you are not allowed to enter.
Do not look at or use your phone in a way that takes your attention away from your surroundings. Routes are suggestions only. Use your own judgement about whether a route is suitable for you, particularly at night, in bad weather or if you have mobility needs.
3. Your account and age requirement
You can browse and use free content without an account. You need an account to buy a tour in the iPhone app or in Praeter Web, so that your purchase can be restored on your other devices. You can buy a tour on our website without signing in, but you need an account to listen to it: either one with the same email address, or the one you are signed in to when you open the link in your order email (see section 4).
You must be 13 years of age or older to create an account. Children under 13 may join a tour with a parent, guardian or other adult who is using the app.
If you are under 18
- You need permission from a parent or guardian to create an account and to buy tours. By creating an account, you confirm that you have that permission.
- Please read these terms with your parent or guardian, so you both know what you are agreeing to.
- In the app, tours are bought through the Apple ID on your device. Parents and guardians can use Apple's Family Sharing, Ask to Buy and Screen Time to approve or block purchases.
- On our website and in Praeter Web, tours are paid for by card or another payment method. Only buy there with your parent's or guardian's permission and with a payment method they have agreed you can use.
- Tell a parent or guardian before you go out on a tour, and follow the safety guidance in section 2.
Nothing in this section takes away any rights you have under the law because you are under 18.
Keep your password private. You are responsible for activity on your account. If you think someone else has access to it, tell us at support@praeter.co.uk.
4. Purchases and licence
You can buy tours in the iPhone app, through Apple's App Store, or through Paddle, on our website or in Praeter Web. Either way, we never see your full card details.
Buying in the app
In the app, tours are sold through Apple's App Store. Apple takes the payment, and Apple's own terms apply to the transaction.
Buying on our website or in Praeter Web
Our order process on the website and in Praeter Web is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all these orders: Paddle sells the tour to you, takes the payment, charges any VAT or sales tax due where you live, and its Buyer Terms apply to the sale. Paddle provides customer service for payments and handles returns. The price is shown on the tour page, and the full amount you will pay, including any tax, is shown in Paddle's checkout before you confirm. The sale is made when your payment is confirmed. If a discount code makes the tour free, there is no sale through Paddle, and our agreement is made when you place the order. Your licence to the tour itself comes from us, under these terms.
In Praeter Web, you buy while signed in, and the tour is added to that account as soon as your payment is confirmed.
You do not sign in to buy on the website. Instead, you give an email address, and the tour reaches your Praeter account in one of two ways:
- By email address. If an account has the same email address and it has been confirmed, the tour is added to it as soon as your payment is confirmed. If you do not have an account yet, create one with the same email address in the iPhone app or on Praeter Web; the tour is added once you have confirmed that address through the link we send you. For your security, we never add a tour to an account whose email address has not been confirmed.
- By the link in your order email. If the tour is not in an account yet, the order email contains a secure link. Opening it while signed in adds the tour to that account, whatever its email address, for example an account made with Sign in with Apple that uses a private relay address. The link works once: anyone with it can add the tour to their account, so keep it private.
Please check the address before you pay. If you made a mistake, contact us at support@praeter.co.uk and we will help. A tour bought on the website or in Praeter Web belongs to your Praeter account, not to your Apple ID, so it is restored by signing in rather than through the App Store's Restore Purchases.
Discount codes
We sometimes offer discount codes. A code takes a percentage off the price of a tour, and the discount is shown before you pay. Unless we tell you otherwise when we give you a code:
- each code can be used once per buyer, and some codes can be used only once in total, by the first person to use them;
- a code may only work for particular tours, and only between the dates we give. It cannot be used after it expires;
- you can use one code per order;
- a code has no cash value. It cannot be exchanged for money, resold or transferred for payment; and
- codes for the website are used on the website, and codes for the app are redeemed through the App Store under Apple's terms.
While you are in Paddle's checkout, a code is held for you for up to 30 minutes. If you leave without paying, it is released. We may refuse or cancel a code that was obtained or used in breach of these rules, or that was offered by mistake. A discount does not reduce your legal rights in section 5.
Your licence
When you buy a tour, we grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to listen to it through Praeter, in the iPhone app or on Praeter Web, for as long as we offer the tour. We will withdraw or materially change a tour you have bought only for the reasons in section 9, and if we do, you get the notice and the remedies set out there. The licence does not transfer ownership of the audio, text or images. You may not copy, redistribute, broadcast or publicly perform them.
5. Cancellation and refunds
If you are a consumer in the UK or the EU, you normally have 14 days to cancel a purchase of digital content and receive a refund.
We supply a tour as soon as your order is confirmed, by making it available to your Praeter account (or, for a website order not yet in an account, through the link in your order email). So when you buy one, you ask us to supply it straight away, and you acknowledge that you will lose the 14-day cancellation right once supply has begun. On our website and in Praeter Web, you give this consent by ticking the box before you pay. The order email we send you confirms the tour you bought, your request and your acknowledgement, and when you gave them. This is the consent required by the UK Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 and Article 16(m) of the EU Consumer Rights Directive.
If we have not begun to supply the tour, for example because your payment has not been confirmed, you can still cancel.
This does not affect your legal rights if the content is faulty, is not as described or does not work as it should.
App Store purchases. Apple handles refunds for purchases made in the app: you can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If Apple declines your request and you believe the content was faulty, contact us at support@praeter.co.uk.
Website purchases. Refunds for tours bought on our website are issued by Paddle, as the seller. To ask for one, email support@praeter.co.uk with the email address you bought with and the tour's name, or contact Paddle through the link in your receipt. If you are entitled to a refund, or we agree to give one, Paddle refunds you to the payment method you used, normally within 14 days of agreeing it. It may take a few more days for your bank to show it. When an order is refunded, the tour is removed from your account. A discount code used on a refunded order is not normally given back.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- copy, record, redistribute or resell tour audio, transcripts or images;
- try to access content you have not bought;
- interfere with the app or our servers, or try to get around any security or access control; or
- submit reviews or feedback that are unlawful, abusive or deliberately misleading.
If you break these rules, we may act as set out in section 11.
7. Content you submit
You keep ownership of the reviews and feedback you send us. You give us permission to store them and use them to run and improve the app, including showing ratings in aggregate. We may remove content that breaches these terms.
8. Tour content and location accuracy
Tours are written for general interest. Historical and other information in a tour may be simplified, incomplete or out of date, and it is not professional advice of any kind.
We do not own or control the places a tour visits. Buildings close, opening hours change, access can be restricted and works can block a route. A place appearing in a tour does not give you any right to enter it.
Local partner places
Some tours show local businesses and attractions that we partner with, marked Local partner in the app. We and these partners promote each other, and we include them at our discretion. We may add, change or remove them at any time.
Local partner places are not part of the tour you buy. They are not counted as stops, and paid tours hide them unless you switch them on in Settings. Free trial tours always show them.
Showing a place is not a recommendation or a guarantee. The partner alone is responsible for its goods, services, prices, offers, opening hours and premises, and anything you buy there is a contract between you and the partner, not us.
Location-triggered audio relies on your device's GPS, which can be inaccurate, particularly near tall buildings or indoors. A stop may start early, late or not at all. You can always play any stop from the list.
9. Availability, changes to tours and withdrawal
We aim to keep Praeter available and working, but we cannot guarantee that it will always be available or free of errors.
Updating a tour
We may update a tour you have bought: to correct mistakes, to reflect changes on the ground (a closed building, a moved entrance, a route that is no longer safe), to improve the audio or writing, or to comply with the law. These updates will not make the tour materially worse than what you paid for, except where a change on the ground leaves us no choice. In that case, the remedies below apply.
Withdrawing a tour
We will withdraw a tour you have bought, or change it in a way that materially reduces it, only for a good reason, such as:
- our right to use part of its content (for example a recording, text or image licensed from someone else) ends;
- the route, or a large part of it, can no longer be walked safely or lawfully;
- the law, or a court or regulator, requires it; or
- we stop offering Praeter altogether.
We will tell you by email, and in the app, at least 30 days before, unless the reason makes that impossible (for example a safety risk or a legal requirement that takes effect at once), in which case we will tell you as soon as we can.
What you get
If we withdraw a tour you have paid for, or change it so that it is materially less than what you paid for, what you get depends on how long ago you bought it, counted to the day we tell you about the withdrawal or change:
- Within 3 months of buying it, you can choose a refund of the price you paid for that tour, or another Praeter tour of similar price instead, if there is one you want.
- More than 3 months after buying it, you can choose a refund of half the price you paid for that tour, or, if you want one, another Praeter tour of similar price instead. A replacement is always your choice: if you don't want any of the tours we offer, or we have none to offer, you get the refund.
For a purchase on our website or in Praeter Web, Paddle issues the refund. For an App Store purchase, Apple controls refunds, so we will ask you to request one from Apple and support your request. If Apple does not refund you, we will refund you ourselves, where you are entitled to a refund under this section. None of this applies where we close your account because you seriously broke these terms (section 11), and none of it affects your other legal rights, including your rights if a tour is faulty or not as described.
The app needs a network connection to download tours. Downloaded tours work offline. Tours that have not been downloaded do not.
10. Our responsibility for loss or damage
What we are responsible for
If we break these terms or fail to use reasonable care and skill, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result. Loss or damage is foreseeable if it was obvious that it would happen, or if both you and we knew it might happen when you accepted these terms. We are not responsible for loss or damage that is not foreseeable.
What we do not exclude or limit
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for:
- death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
- fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;
- breach of your legal rights in relation to digital content, including the right to content that is of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described; or
- anything else for which the law does not allow us to exclude or limit our liability.
Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.
Damage to your device
If digital content we supply damages your device or other digital content belonging to you, and this is caused by our failure to use reasonable care and skill, we will either repair the damage or compensate you. We will not be responsible for damage you could have avoided by installing a free update we offered or by meeting the minimum system requirements we told you about.
Private use only
Praeter is for domestic and private use. We are not liable to you for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity.
Things outside our responsibility
We are not responsible for:
- injury, loss or damage, to the extent it is caused by your failure to take reasonable care of your own safety or to follow the guidance in section 2;
- the condition, safety, opening hours or accessibility of any place on a route, or the actions of anyone you meet there;
- the goods, services, prices or offers of any local partner place;
- inaccurate GPS readings, or the failure of mobile networks, your device, Apple's services or Paddle's services; or
- websites or services run by others that the app links to.
If an event outside our reasonable control delays or prevents us from meeting our obligations, we will tell you as soon as we can and take steps to minimise the effect. We will not be liable for the delay or failure, but if there is a risk of substantial delay you may contact us to end the agreement and receive a refund for any tour you have paid for but not been able to use.
11. Suspension and ending this agreement
You can stop using Praeter at any time, and you can delete your account in Settings → Account.
If you break these terms
What we do depends on how serious the breach is:
- Putting it right. For most breaches, such as a review that breaks the rules in section 6, we will tell you what the problem is and give you a reasonable chance to put it right. We may remove the content concerned in the meantime.
- Temporary suspension. We may suspend your account, or only the feature concerned (for example, posting reviews), while we look into a breach, or where it is needed to protect other users, our systems or our content. A suspension will be no wider and last no longer than the problem needs, and we will lift it once the problem is resolved.
- Closing your account. We will close your account and end this agreement only if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, for example by copying, sharing or reselling tour content, attacking our systems or paying with a payment method you are not allowed to use, or if you do not put right a breach after we have asked you to.
We will tell you what we are doing and why, by email, before we act or as soon as we can afterwards, unless the law or a risk to others stops us. If you think we have made a mistake, reply to that email and we will review our decision. If we close your account because you seriously broke these terms, the remedies in section 9 do not apply, but your other legal rights are not affected.
If we end it for another reason
If we end this agreement for any other reason, including because we stop offering Praeter, we will give you the notice and remedies in section 9.
12. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms only to reflect changes in the law or in regulators' guidance, changes to how Praeter works or the services it relies on (such as Apple's or Paddle's), new features, or to make them clearer or correct mistakes.
If a change materially affects you, we will tell you by email and in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. A change to these terms will not take away or reduce your access to a tour you have already bought. That can happen only under section 9, with its notice and remedies.
If you do not accept a change, you can tell us before it takes effect and end this agreement. If the change is to your disadvantage, you can ask us for a refund of any tour you have paid for and not yet had a reasonable chance to use. Otherwise, the updated terms apply from the date they take effect.
13. General
If a court finds any part of these terms unenforceable, the rest of the terms will still apply. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. We may transfer this agreement to another organisation, and your rights under it will not be affected. Apart from Apple as described in section 14, no one other than you and us has any right to enforce these terms.
14. Apple
These terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for Praeter and its content. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. If the app fails to meet an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) of the app. To the extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app. We, not Apple, are responsible for handling any claims relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, consumer protection claims and claims that the app infringes someone else's intellectual property.
Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and, once you accept them, Apple has the right to enforce them against you. Your use of the app must also comply with the App Store's Usage Rules.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer living in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may also bring proceedings in your local courts. If you are a consumer living in the EEA, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country, and you may bring proceedings there.
16. Complaints
If you are unhappy with Praeter or a tour you have bought, email us at support@praeter.co.uk with the email address you used, the tour's name and what went wrong. We will acknowledge your complaint within 3 working days and aim to give you a full response within 14 days. If we need longer, we will tell you why and when to expect an answer.
Complaints about a payment, a charge or a refund for a purchase on our website or in Praeter Web can also go to Paddle, our reseller, through the link in your receipt. For purchases made in the iPhone app, Apple handles payments and refunds.
If you are not satisfied with our final response, it will tell you what you can do next. If you live in the UK, you can get free advice from Citizens Advice. We do not currently use an alternative dispute resolution provider. None of this affects your legal rights, including your right to go to court.
